How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Senior Photographer?
Every season, I have the same conversation with a handful of families. They reach out in August wanting a September session and I have to deliver news nobody wants to hear: I’m already booked.
It’s not a sales tactic.
It’s just math.
I work with a limited number of seniors each season on purpose — because the process I use requires real time and attention.
And that means my calendar fills earlier than most families expect.
So when should you actually reach out? Here’s the honest answer.
Earlier Than You Think
For most families in the Huron and South Dakota area, I recommend reaching out six to nine months before you want your session to happen. That might sound extreme. It isn’t.

Here’s why the timeline works the way it does:
The best session dates — late summer golden hour, peak fall color, early morning before the heat — get claimed first.
My pre-session process involves multiple conversations before we ever pick up a camera. That process takes time and it’s part of what makes the photos what they are.
Seniors who reach out early have more flexibility on dates, locations, and session structure. Seniors who wait are working around what’s left.
The Senior Portrait Season in South Dakota
In South Dakota, senior portrait season runs roughly from late spring through early fall — June through October. The sweet spots are:
Early June
School is wrapping up, seniors are energized, and the light is long and warm. A great time for outdoor sessions before the heat peaks.
Late July — August
Late July and August in South Dakota is genuinely stunning. This is peak season and the most requested window. It’s also the first to fill up.
September — October
Fall sessions have a different feel — cooler temperatures, turning colors, softer light. Some of my favorite sessions happen in September. If you want fall, reach out no later than spring.

What Happens If You Wait
Waiting doesn’t just limit your date options. It limits your session. A senior who books early gets the full planning process — multiple conversations, a session built around their vision, time to figure out locations and outfits without stress.
A senior who books late gets a great session, but we’re working faster and with less runway. The photos are still good. They’re just not what they could have been with more time.

The session I can build for someone who reaches out in January looks different from the one I can build for someone who reaches out in July. Both are good. Only one is great.
The Best Time to Reach Out Is Right Now
Whatever month you’re reading this — if your senior is within two years of graduation, now is a good time to start a conversation. Even if you’re not ready to book, reaching out early puts you in the conversation and gives us both time to figure out what the right session looks like.
The first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It’s just two people figuring out if this is a good fit.
