How to Choose the Right Outfits for Your Senior Photos in South Dakota

I want to start with something most photographers won’t say:

Outfit choice matters a lot less than most seniors think — and a lot more than most parents think.

Here’s what I mean. I’ve seen seniors show up in the most carefully curated outfits and the photos fall flat because the senior felt uncomfortable and stiff. And I’ve seen seniors show up in a beat-up flannel shirt they’ve worn a thousand times and the photos are stunning because they were completely themselves.

Clothes don’t make the photo. But the right clothes can make the senior feel confident enough that the real version of them shows up on camera. That’s the actual goal.

Here’s how I walk seniors through outfit planning before every session.

Start With How You Want to Feel, Not How You Want to Look

Before you open your closet, ask yourself one question: how do you want to feel in these photos?

Confident? Relaxed? Bold? Nostalgic? The answer to that question should drive every outfit decision that follows. A senior who wants to feel powerful is going to wear something different than a senior who wants to feel like themselves on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Both are valid. Both make great photos. But they’re different sessions.

I ask every senior this question in our planning conversations, and the answer almost always points directly to the right outfit direction.

How Many Outfits Do You Actually Need?

For most sessions, I recommend three to four outfits. Here’s how to think about them:

Your first outfit should be something that feels most like you on a regular day. Not your fanciest outfit. Not something you bought specifically for photos. The thing you’d wear if someone said ‘we’re going somewhere casual but you want to look good.’ That outfit almost always produces the most natural, authentic photos of the session.

Your second outfit can be the elevated version — something dressier, more polished, or more intentional. This is where seniors who want something a little more formal can lean in without it feeling like the whole session.

If you have a third or fourth outfit, those should be the specific ones — your jersey, your FFA jacket, your dance costume, the flannel you wear every Saturday. These are the outfits that tell a story about who you actually are right now.

What Works on Camera in South Dakota’s Light

South Dakota has some of the most beautiful natural light in the country. But outdoor light is also unforgiving with certain colors and patterns. Here’s what I’ve learned from years of shooting in it:

Colors that photograph well outdoors:

  • Earth tones — rust, olive, cream, tan, warm brown. These work with South Dakota’s landscape rather than against it.

  • Deep, saturated colors — navy, forest green, burgundy. Bold but not neon.

  • Classic neutrals — white, grey, black. Always clean, always versatile.

Things to approach carefully:

  • Bright neon colors. They’re fun in person, but can overwhelm the photo and cast color onto your skin.

  • Busy patterns and small prints. Plaid and stripes can work beautifully — but thin stripes and very busy prints can create a visual distraction that pulls attention away from your face.

  • Overly matching outfits if you’re including family members. Coordinated is better than identical.

A note on white:

White looks stunning in the right light, especially near water or in open fields. But it can also get blown out in direct sun. If you want to include a white outfit, plan it for the beginning or end of the session when the light is softer.

The South Dakota Seasonal Consideration

If you’re shooting in summer — which is peak season in Huron — keep in mind that late afternoon heat is real. Lighter fabrics in breathable materials aren’t just comfortable, they photograph better because you’re not visibly uncomfortable in them.

For fall sessions, layering is your best friend. A great flannel over a simple shirt, a jacket you can take on and off — these give us options within a single outfit and work beautifully against the South Dakota fall landscape.

Winter and early spring sessions are less common but genuinely stunning. If you’re shooting in colder months, plan one outfit that works with a great coat or jacket as the statement piece. Some of my favorite senior photos have been taken in January with snow on the ground.

The One Outfit Rule I Give Every Senior

Bring one outfit you’ve been second-guessing.

The thing you packed and almost left at home because you weren’t sure if it was ‘senior photo appropriate.’ The vintage band tee. The overalls. The dress that feels maybe too casual.

Almost every time a senior brings that outfit, it produces the best photos of the session. Because it’s the thing that’s actually them — not the thing they thought they were supposed to wear.

There is no such thing as not senior photo appropriate. There is only what looks like you and what doesn’t.

What About Hair and Makeup?

Do whatever makes you feel most like yourself. That’s genuinely the only rule.

Some seniors do full hair and makeup and feel incredible. Some seniors show up with a ponytail and no makeup and feel incredible. Both produce stunning photos. The goal is confidence, not a particular look.

One practical note: if you’re doing hair and makeup before your session, plan for it to take longer than you expect. Rushing to a session feeling stressed undoes a lot of the preparation work. Give yourself a buffer.
